The New Afrika
Development Corporation (NADC) in conjunction with the New Crossroads Sports
and Recreation Council are staging a second edition of this annual event The
World Aids Day Sports Festival at J.Nontulo Sports Facility behind the Ndlovini
Hall in New Crossroads. The programme this year starts with an hour of
interdenominational prayer for peace and security in our gangster-infested
communities, followed by football, netball and other codes tournaments. In the

CHOC Childhood Foundation remembers children who lost their lives to cancer
The annual CHOC
Remembrance Service was held on Saturday,
24 November 2012. It is a national event took place in all their
divisions. The event is to commemorate the lives of the children who have lost
their battle. It is not only an opportunity for the families of these children
to celebrate their lives, but also for others to show their support and

AfrikaTikkun to build World biggest ribbon
In the lead
up to World Aids Day, where Afrika Tikkun, Constitution Hill and Lead SA will be attempting to create an
HIV/Aids Awareness ribbon that is long enough to break the Guinness World
Record; organisers of the event have asked members of the public to assist in
getting 50-metre strips of “ribbon” ready for Saturday. Between 09h00 and 17h00
on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, good Samaritans around the Johannesburg area are asked to help make a difference at Afrika

Dsgn Tete a Tete on Design Can Do event
Design Can Do is an international social design organisation geared to identifying, addressing and problem solving social issues across the world. Using the workshop model as a starting point, the organisation has been in partnership with local design group Rock City Foundation in developing a toolkit and problem solving style potentially applicable in different international locations to kick start the social design process. In the studio we had as guests Sune Stassen co founder of the Rock City Foundation, Danielle Ehrlich owner and creative director soeaciliasing in sustainability at LIV Green Design and Jodi Allemeier of Central City Development Strategy manager at Cape Town Partnership.
Aids Legal Network on gender and violence
A study conducted by the AIDS Legal Network
and her partners clearly highlights the various forms and prevalence of
violence against women living with HIV and illustrates the multi risks with
women’s HIV status disclosure. The study supported by the UN Trust Fund to End
Violence Against Women documented both women’s experiences of HIV-related
violence and communities perceptions of violence against women living in four
areas namely New Brigton (EC) Illovo (KZN) and Beacon Valley and Tafelsig (WC).

Town between November 28 and December 17 which
has been noticing a shift from land-based conservation to ocean and more generally

Dixtrict Six hosts Emancipation Day festivties
So the time has
come for remembrance and celebration of the day the slaves were set ‘free’. The
District 6 Museum will be having the annual Emancipation Day festivities
starting from Friday evening 30/11/2012 to Saturday 01/12/2012 .
The festivities include: a premiere/fundraiser at the Homecoming centre, a live
performance by Afrikaaps members Jitsvinger and Jethro Louw, a remembrance walk
through town, a midnight picnic

Visuals arts to take the sportlight
Greatmore Studios is an artist resident
studio based in Woodstock and has been in
existence for over 14 years. The studios run a number of programs including the
Outreach programme and Visiting Artists programme. On the 28th
November at 18:00 at their studios and eveyone is welcome as they will be launching a showcase for their resident artist, visiting
artists and some guest artists. In the studio was project manager Zipho Dayile and visiting artist Alex
De Doorns striking workers adamant on R150 a day increase
The farm workers' strike that started weeks
ago continues despite the labour department’s call for a two-week suspension.
The strike started in De Doorns and spread to other parts of the province which
included blocked roads, looting, and burning of tyres. The strike has left
28-year-old farm worker dead and five people were injured during protests in
Wolseley, close to Ceres. The farm workers are demanding a R150 minimum wage
per day and improved living and working conditions. De Doorns farm workers are
currently earning R69 a day, of which R30 is deducted by their bosses for
electricity. They were in the studio…

dedicated to raising awareness and creating an appreciation within the greater Western Cape community for the
exceptional skills and value that Blind and Visually impaired people are able

Mark McNamara on Bike Africa
Mark McNamara has
initiated a new project called Bike Africa, a bicycle journey through Africa raising funds for orphaned and vulnerable children. This year, Mark and
cycling mascot Katie Dee, an Austraian koala, have cycled through ten countries
from Kampala, Uganda to Cape Town, in the good name of raising funds for ‘Keep
the Dream 196’, a non-profit organization in Limpopo that supports vulnerable
children to lead better lives. Mark spoke to us about this initiative...

Press Ombudsman Joe Thloloe
Joe Thloloe, SA Press Ombudsman addressed the Western Cape newsrooms on the
revisions of the Press Code, Procedures, and Constitutions on 21-22 November,
2012. The unveiled constitution of the Press Council of South Africa states its
primary aim and objective as: “To promote and to develop ethical practice in
journalism” and puts forward the SA Press Code as a guide to excellent

Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children is a United Nations
campaign, which takes place annually from the 25th November

Dsgn Tete a Tete looks at DAC Indaba
The Department of Arts and Culture recently held an indaba in Johannesburg last month with the intention of electing a visual Arts Task team to implement the recommendations of a 2008 Human Sciences Research Council Report into the Arts Industry and consult with the Minister of DAC. The indaba was met with met with mixed reactions from the art industry with sccuations of inadequate communication the questionable applicability of what it might be seen as an outdated report and the uncertain intentions of the department. SEDA's Entrepreneurship Fair
Creative thinkers from the business world
are set to gather at the Seda Entrepreneurship Fair in late November with the
aim of growing this sector. The Small Enterprise Development Agency will host
this fair in partnership with the University of Stellenbosch , the Stellenbosch
municipality and participating venue, The Woodmill, Vredenburg Road , Stellenbosch. The

Smile Foundation SA hosts Tygerberg Smile Week
The Smile
Foundation is a South African non-governmental organisation for children.
Charity work of this nature is undeniably gratifying as we’re in the business
of changing the lives of disadvantaged South African children with facial
deformities. We assist by putting the smile back onto our children’s faces with
free corrective facial reconstructive surgery and treatments. The SmileFundSA
is currently busy with its Tygerberg Smile Week where it aims to change the

Little Fighters Cancer Trust raises awareness on child cancer
Make a difference in the battle against
childhood cancer by participating in the Little Fighters call to Run/Walk or
Hunt to raise much needed funds and awareness of this debilitating
disease. The event starts at 8h00 from
the V&A Waterfront Amphitheatre with the choice of a 5km run, a 5km walk or
a 3km family walk, ending back at the Amphitheatre with a prize giving at 9h30.

Homestead Projects urges public to change a child's life...
As the festive season is approaching The
Homestead-Projects for Street Children, is asking you if you are willing to
please put together a food parcel for a boy who used to leave on the streets.
He has now turned his life around and is now living in one of their Children’s
Home in Khayelitsha and is making progress in school. The home is trying to
ensure that forty of the boys in their care will be going to a family member

Kriki4Shore cleans beaches and recycling waste to cricket materials
Kriki for Shore
encourages local communities to “play clean” with beach cricket sets that help
clean up beaches, while educating young South Africans on the importance of
reducing, reusing and recycling waste. Each Kriki for Shore beach cricket set
is created using waste material including plastic and bottle-tops collected
from South African beaches, creating work opportunities for coastal community

Former Khayelitsha female boxer Andiswa Madikane
Andiswa Madikane is 26, unemployed, a single mother of two children and shares a two-bedroom makeshift house with eight other relatives in Khayelitsha. Her way to the top — and that teary-eyed finale — would be that she trains young girls how to throw punches at a township boxing gym while making a difference in their lives. Andiswa Madikane was in the studio telling us about her dream, her highlight in the rings and what it means to be a female boxer in the township.

Blind cricketers to be awarded national colours
Friday 16 November some blind cricketers
will be awarded national colours at a ceremony to take place at 8pm Shalimar Hotel. Amongst those to who will receive colours
for the very first time is Vernon Barnard a young matriculant at the Pioneer School for The Blind in Worcester and Sergil January
a talented young cricketer from CAFDA who was blinded some six years ago as a
result of a person to person violence. League of Friends of

Artist Linda Evans exhibits
Linda Evans art exhibition will be running
from November 2012 through to end January 2013. Art can be so un-pretentious
and yet so effective which is what Linda says she loves about the pop art
culture. She also seems to be drawn to the shape of the human form itself and
not the detail of creed, colour or race, which is too often what we judge about
each other! Basically “keeping it simple” is the theme of this year’s

South African Qualifications Authority eight month National Qualifications Framework course
The University of the Western Cape in partnership with the South African Qualifications
Authority held an eight month course entitled Lifelong Learning and National Qualifications
Frameworks: Leaders for Learning. The course was structured as mixed mode,
which means it is offered as online learning as well as with a residential
block week. There were students from management in education and training
systems in Ethiopia , Namibia , Botswana , South Africa and Australia , who engaged in their own professional development. Globally

The Parent Centre hosts parent expo
The
Parent Centre was established 28 years ago in May 1983 as a project of the Cape
Town Welfare Society. The centre was initially started as a primary prevention
centre to reduce the influence of child abuse through the promotion of positive
parenting and effective child management practices that would enhance the
well-being and self esteem of parents and children. This centre also empowers
and supports parents and caregivers to raise and nurture resilient, well
balanced and competent children who develop in self sufficient, successful

The City of Cape Town , Economic
Development Department, has implemented a Craft Market at the Plumstead
Municipal building 2 years ago. This project was aligned to the Mayor’s Poverty
alleviation program which was launched at the Cape Town Civic Centre. The
program had to be decentralised into the various districts throughout the City
of Cape Town . The Craft Market
has proven to be successful due to the training, skills development and
capacity building focus for the Traders.

Diabetes Day takes place today November 14.The World Diabetes Day 2012 campaign
marks the fourth year of the five-year focus on “Diabetes education and

Free Gender calls for vigorous action on hate crimes
An activist
group Free Gender called on government to help stop the scourge of homophobic
killings after the murder of a 19-year-old lesbian woman who was stabbed to
death on Friday last week. Media reports suggest Sihle Sikoli was walking from
a tavern with a friend when they were attacked. Friends of the young woman
believe her murder is a hate crime. The organisation’s Funeka Sodaat spoke to us about some of the challnges lesbians are faced with in SA...
WOW is launched
Women of Worth a profit organisation that
was recently launched aimed at addressing challenges that are faced by women

Health department opens Infectious Diseases Clinic in Heideveld

Reports of teenage girls drinking heavily
while pregnant so their babies are born with foetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), so
they will qualify for disability grants, has prompted research into this
phenomenon. While such cases have not been reported in the Western Cape - known for its
high FAS rate – it has been reprted that some pregnant women in the province
drink heavily in the hope of aborting unwanted babies. CEO for Foundation for

Boredom captured through the lens
Photographer Max Mogale is exploring the
concept of boredom in his latest photographic exhibition Exhibit B at the Side

50 000 children arrested for crimes in SA last year
Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa has called
on the nation to protect children following stats that revealed that over 50
thousand children were charged with crime last year. The minister earlier today
reiterated that police will intensify the war against perpetrators of crime
against children including adults who influence and abuse children to commit
crime for their own criminal benefit. Police spokesperson Zweli Mnisi spoke to us about some of the ways they are trying to curb children committing crime…

eLibrary aims to revolutionalise learning
eBook reading could play a significant role in
improving the reading experience and academic advancement of children in
disadvantaged schools. Accordingly, the eLibrary Project is examining the
feasibility of distributing Kindle eBook Readers to school libraries around the
country. The advantage of the Kindle is that it provides learners
with access to a large volume of information. The Kindle has the potential to

DA launches plan to improve teachers recruiting program
In the World Economic Forum Financial
Development report released recently South Africa was ranked last
for the quality of math and science education on number 62 of 62 countries
surveyed. The DA argues that this is due mainly that the Department of Basic
Education’s primary teacher attracting tool the Funza Lushaka Bursary programme
is failing. Therefore the party launched its own plan aimed at improving the

Cycling for Diabetes on from Johannesburg to George
Ahead of World Diabetes Day, 16 cyclists
will be hitting the tar on 8 November to take up the Changing Diabetes
Cycle4Diabetes Challenge, a nonstop cycling marathon from Johannesburg to George in just
48 hours. The aim of this nonstop event is to raise awareness and funds to
provide treatment for underprivileged youngsters living with this chronic
condition. The group will be accompanied by legendary former Bok, Joel
