Help2Read- Improving lives through Literacy

As September marks the start of Literacy Month, with the celebration of Literacy Day on September the 8th, help2read are pleased to see literacy take center stage in  media. Illiteracy among primary school learners are extremely high in South Africa.  78% of Grade 4 learners are unable to read for meaning and understanding.  With this devastating statistic, help2read reminds themselves of what they do- support children as they learn to read. The aim is to erase illiteracy in South Africa with the help of their volunteers, Literacy Tutors, supporters and donors.

"We partner with a number of schools and organisations to deliver reading help to children that need it through our Reading Help ProgrammeWhile we mainly work in the Western Cape and Gauteng, we do also partner with organisations outside of these areas through our External Partnerships Programme."

Majority of primary schools in South Africa are  under resourced. Two or three books are shared between an entire classroom of learners, while writing utensils and literacy resources are scarce. Few children from poor township communities have books at home, and libraries are often too far away for these learners to access on a regular basis, if at all. These factors rob  many South African children of opportunities to develop literacy skills and fall in love with reading.

IT ALL COMES DOWN TO LITERACY

The effects of the literacy crisis in South Africa are far-reaching, and touch every area of South African society, deeply affecting and further marginalizing the poor.
