Girls With Wiings: Restoring Dignity, One Pad at a Time
Girls With Wiings: Restoring Dignity, One Pad at a Time
Published: May 27, 2025
In Cape Town, South Africa, many women and girls face serious challenges when it comes to managing their periods. Some are homeless, others live in poverty and most simply don’t have access to sanitary products. That’s where Girls With Wiings comes in. Since 2016, this inspiring organization has given out over 27,000 sanitary pads, helping women manage their periods with dignity and confidence.
But their work goes beyond hygiene they’re also creating jobs, supporting small businesses, and changing lives.
How It All Began
The idea for Girls With Wiings started when the team saw how many women were using cloth, newspaper, or nothing at all during their periods. This wasn’t just uncomfortable it was unsafe and deeply humiliating. They decided to take action by providing sanitary pads to those who couldn’t afford them.
Changing Lives, Not Just Cycles
Giving out pads may seem like a small act, but it has a big impact. Girls are able to stay in school, women feel more confident at work, and everyone is spared the shame and health risks that come with period poverty. It’s not just about products it’s about dignity.
Menstrual Health Matters
Many people don’t realize how much a lack of menstrual products can affect a person’s life. Without pads, women may stay home from school or work, risking their future and their health. In South Africa, where period poverty is still a major issue, menstrual health is a basic need that can’t be ignored.
Creating Jobs and Opportunities
In 2021, Girls With Wiings launched their own brand of sanitary pads and started a small business program. This helps local women earn an income while making sure more people have access to affordable menstrual products. It’s a win-win hygiene support and economic empowerment.
Reaching Hundreds Each Month
The organization now supports over 400 women every month, often through local shelters, schools, and community groups. Partnerships play a big role in getting pads to the people who need them most.
Responding to the COVID-19 Crisis
During the pandemic, Girls With Wiings delivered more than 9,000 products when movement was restricted and needs were greater than ever. They found creative ways to keep going using volunteers, social media, and strong community ties.
How You Can Help
You don’t need a lot of money to make a difference. Just two pads or R20 a month can help one woman. Donations, volunteering, or spreading the word on social media are all great ways to get involved.
Every Small Act Counts
Some people worry that giving a small amount doesn’t matter but it absolutely does. Each pad is one less worry for a woman who already has enough on her plate.
Looking to the Future
Girls With Wiings hopes to grow their work across South Africa and reach even more women. They plan to expand their job-creation programs and become a national movement for menstrual dignity.
What Dignity Looks Like
For the women they serve, dignity means being able to go out in public, go to school, or attend a job interview without fear or shame. It means feeling clean, safe, and respected just like everyone deserves.
A Message to Those Still Struggling
If you’re someone currently facing period poverty, know that you’re not alone. There are people out there who care, who are working to help, and who believe you deserve better.
Why Homeless Women Need Special Support
Homeless women face bigger risks ack of access to toilets, clean water, or safe spaces. Sanitary products aren’t a luxury; they’re a necessity that helps protect their health and self-worth.
Distributing with Respect
Girls With Wiings doesn’t just hand out pads. They make sure every woman feels seen, heard, and valued. Their approach is kind, respectful, and empowering.
Real Change, Real Stories
Women who receive support from the organization often say it changes more than their period experience. It changes their confidence, their comfort, and their ability to move forward.
You Can Be Part of the Change
Even a small donation can help someone feel human again. Helping just one person is already making a big difference.
To support Girls With Wiings, follow them on social media or visit their website. Whether you give time, money, or just help spread awareness, your action matters.
