Cape Mental Health Society

We opened the show today with Nadine Abrahams, coordinator of public education and volunteers at the Cape Mental Health Society. She spoke about the work that the Society is doing within communities.

‘Cape Mental Health believes that people with intellectual and psychiatric disabilities have a right to a place in society, and a right to education, training, work and social inclusion’

They work within the greater Cape Town area, especially impoverished and rural communities.

She also highlighted the training and assistance to caregivers and to the families of their service-users to cope with the particular home circumstances that rises from having a disabled or distressed child or adult in the home.

Help2Read

We were later joined by Sue Howell, the Director of Help2Read.

‘At help2read we believe that education is the cornerstone of every nation, and reading is the cornerstone of every education’

Help2Read improves and teaches children reading skills by the using exciting and interesting programmes. They work with primary school children, ages 5-12, who find reading difficult.

She also explained how they turn reading into play:” We recruit and train volunteers from the local community to help children read. Sessions are entirely child led, so children can only enjoy themselves. Very quickly, children look forward to reading instead of dreading it! “

Formalising of Initiation Practices

We ended the show with Mandla Yeki, spokesperson for the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport.

“In a groundbreaking move to arrest the deteriorating situation, drug and alcohol abuse at initiation sites in the Western Cape, MEC Whitey Jacobs launched the first-ever provincial initiation project in Gugulethu today,” says Yeki.

A total of 40 certificates of attendance and appreciation were awarded to traditional nurses and surgeons who have attended the first-aid course designed specifically to equip them to deal with present health challenges.
