‘What-On-Earth-Is-Happening’

We opened the show with Leila Beltramo of the citizen group ‘What-On-Earth-Is-Happening’. The group was started in July of this year in line with the Live Earth event that was shown worldwide on 7 July 2007.

Their first project takes place on 8 December 2007, whereby they’ll be cleaning the Black River that has recently been in the news for the high levels of ecoli (which is harmful to ones health).

“…to create awareness of the Black River situation and then to try and get corporates and individuals involved in ensuring it is an ongoing clean up and we can get funds to eradicate the invasive weeds and clean up stream and educate people on the impact of littering,”

Bonteheuwel News

We were then joined by Nawaal Boltman, editor of the Bonteheuwel News.

This is a community newspaper that aims to uplift and rid the stigmas surrounding the Bonteheuwel community and its surrounding areas.

“What makes us different from other papers is that we try to write more positive stories about the area,” says Nawaal.

The paper comes out once a month and is free of charge. The paper runs solely on advertising, hence they are calling on anyone who would like to advertise or help keep the paper going to do so.

Red Cross Golf Day

We ended the show today with Pumi Yeni who is in charge of fundraising at the South African Red Cross Society.

This one day golf event to win the ‘Humanity Cup’ will take place on Friday (7 December 2007).

The theme of the event is helping the Red Cross reach the most vulnerable of our community: the orphaned and vulnerable children of South Africa.

The event is in relation to the 16 Days of Activism campaign.
