Hearts and Hands Exhibition

Today we opened the show with Collin Daniels of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology.
He spoke about their Hearts and Hands Exhibition which showcased the works of all Graphic design students, especially those who are completing their final year and who are ready to enter the workplace.
‘High school students from around the Western Cape were encouraged to attend the exhibition to learn about Graphic Design as a profession’
A collection of designs were on show. Namely websites, advertisements, promotional brochures, posters, banknotes, product packaging, labeling and bottle designs.

Cape Flats Development Agency

We were later joined by Charlene Hendrickse, a Fundraiser at the Cape Flats Development Agency (Cafda).
Cafda has been providing services to communities on the Cape Flats for the more than six decades.
‘One of their projects includes the establishment of a crèche and play centre for children with working parents, by converting an old farmhouse on a disused piece of land. Another building on the farm was converted into a Community Centre’
Cafda provides a number of services to the disadvantaged in all population groups, irrespective of race or religion, with the main target group living on the Cape Flats.

South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG)

We also spoke to Njumunisa Solomons a councilor at the South African Depression and Anxiety Group.

‘2007 marks the 12th Anniversary of the South African Depression and Anxiety group (SADAG). For the last 12 years SADAG has been at the forefront of providing counseling services, mental health awareness programmes, powerful media campaigns, school talks and rural outreach initiatives to thousands of patients, families and communities in South Africa.’

SADAG also boasts over 120 support groups nationwide, and has an extensive referral guide reaching into the most remote regions of South Africa. Trained counselors operate the Mental Health Counseling Centre and the toll free Suicide Crisis Line everyday from 8am to 8pm.
