Athlone Academy of Music

We opened the show with Sam Jonker, Director of the Athlone Academy of Music.

They spoke about the work that is being done at the Academy as well as the R110 000 donation they received to improve music education on the Cape Flats.

‘…to provide access to interested persons, especially those who have been historically marginalised, to the world of music, with specific reference to skills, resources, infrastructure and opportunities. To become one of the finest and most affordable music schools in the Western Cape’

The Academy has about 500 students who are part of their programme. The youngest being 5 years old and the oldest close to 70.

Eskom-18% tariff hike

We were later joined by Andrew Etzinger, General Manager of Demand Fide Management at Eskom and he explained why the
Company wants to increase the price consumers are paying for electricity.

According to Etzinger, South Africa has the cheapest rates for electricity in the whole world.

The plan to hike the tariff is in an effort to finance an upgrade in Eskom’s creaking infrastructure.

It’s been reported that Eskom’s Chief Executive Jacob Maroga says that prices have to go up. “We are spending R150-billion over the next five years to build new plants and to improve services and all this has to be paid for,”

Award Winning Poet

We were then joined in studio by the talented Prentice Powell. He is all the way from Oakland in the USA. He is in South Africa for the Violence Intervention and Prevention summit that was held at the His People Conference Centre in N1 City.

Powell is a spoken word artist, poet and educator. He is ranked 4th in the nation. In 2006 he became the Oaklands and San Francisco slam champion. And in 2007 he was the awarded with the title of Spoken Word Artist of the Year at the Black Music Awards.

This talented man also works youth throughout Northern California offering creative writing workshops.

He also pointed out that the overseas media mostly shows the “bad” sides of Africa, but never the positive. “They make us think that animals are just roaming around freely and that children have flies on their faces…”

Powell also performed a piece of the first poem he ever wrote.
