VING HOW MI-CHANGE IS GIHOPE INSTEAD OF CASH

HOW MI-CHANGE IS GIVING HOPE INSTEAD OF CASH

Mi-Change ,an organisation that encourages responsible giving through vouchers that can only be redeemed through for essential services! “Helping someone experiencing homelessness often feels as simple as giving them money, but Mi-Change is encouraging South Africans to think differently”says Carmen who is a national manager of the Mi-change organization. During a Bush Radio interview, representatives from Mi-Change, an initiative supported by U-turn and MES (Mould, Empower, Serve), explained how their voucher system provides people living on the streets with access to meals, clothing, shelter, showers, counselling and rehabilitation services. Rather than offering temporary relief, the organisation aims to connect people with the support they need to rebuild their lives and regain their dignity.

One of the most inspiring moments of the interview we had on 13th July on the Back Chat show with Carmen the manager of  Mi-Change and Dylan the a dministrator, who shared his personal journey. After spending 12 years struggling with drug addiction and gang involvement, his life began to change when a stranger handed him a Mi-Change voucher on a rainy day. He used the voucher to access food and clothing before joining U-turn’s work programme, where participants earn vouchers by helping clean communities. Today, Dylan has his own apartment, works for Mi-Change, has obtained his driver’s licence and graduated as a full-stack developer. His story shows how one small act of kindness can become the beginning of a life-changing journey.

To make the system more accessible, the organisation has introduced both paper vouchers, sold in packs of four for R50, and a new digital voucher system that allows registered beneficiaries to receive and redeem vouchers electronically at participating U-turn and MES service centres.

As Mi-Change continues to expand from Cape Town to Johannesburg, the organisation is calling on businesses to become voucher resellers and encouraging communities to support its mission. Dylan’s story is a reminder that homelessness is often linked to deeper challenges such as addiction and trauma, and that lasting change requires more than meeting someone’s immediate needs. By choosing to give a Mi-Change voucher instead of cash, members of the public can help offer not only practical support, but also hope and a genuine opportunity for a better future.
