: Stricter anti-smoking measures coming in May

We interviewed VANESSA SEW CHUNG HONG an anti-smoking lobbyist who also works very closely with the National Council Against Smoking, the Cansa Association of South Africa and the Heart and Stroke Foundation]. Smokers will have to tolerate stricter anti-smoking measures as of May. May 2009 is Tobacco Control Awareness Month.

This month is in line with the upcoming tobacco control legislations which are to be implemented in South Africa with a control bill already signed by parliament but expected to be promulgated in during the month. See the attached document summarising the amendment act [Tobacco Products Control Amendment Act No. 23 of 2007 and Act No 63 of 2008].
31st May is also World No Tobacco Day with the theme, tobacco control awareness.
