03 December 2007

Today marks International Day of Disabled Persons. The theme for this year’s celebration is “decent work for persons with disabilities”. Now let’s look at what took place on Backchat today…

Africa Unite

Today we opened the show with Vusi Madengwane of Africa Unite.
Africa Unite was formed in response to concerns voiced by young adults living in South Africa, and these concerns have continued to shape existing projects and initiatives since 2005.

“During 2005, Africa Unite members suggested that the organisation launch an Arts & Culture programme in response to needs voiced by young adults and communities. Africa Unite members felt that Arts & Culture activities would provide positive channels for boosting self-esteem, preventing crime, generating income and promoting social integration for young adults.”

Carel Dutoit Centre

We later spoke to the principal of the Carel Du Toit Centre, Laurette Du Preez. The Centre is situated in Tygerberg and teaches deaf children spoken language. They also help the parents of these children to raise funds for cochlear implants.

They take on children of all ages, “…but we do recommend that parents send the children when they are still babies…” says Laurette.
The fees for the school are also affordable; therefore everyone has a chance to send their children who have hearing problems.
