Lika Berning from Ikasi Creative
Ikasi Creative
Backchat was joined by the inspiring Lika Berning , from Ikasi Creative. Ikasi is a digital media that tells a story and gives a voice to the next generation. As digital media takes it’s place in the digital revolution, they open up opportunities for the youth to participate in the new creative economy.
Ikasi is a level 1 non- profit BBBEE contributor. They help assist companies to
meet BBBEE obligations through skills development programmes and unaccredited
training. They reach out via their digital media creative content programmes to
see a massive change brought to rural youth through employment, job
creation and entrepreneurial development.
Lika shared with us that the organisation was established officially in 2016. The journey as she said has been fantastic within the 7 years that they exist and she also mentioned that they have has to deal with covid but she remains extremely grateful to their sponsors.
Another point she touched on was
the programmes that they run, they reach out to rural areas such as the eastern
cape and also the northern cape by bringing basic film, television skills to
the community and the environment. They also take youth out of those communities
and place them in a boot camp where they can expand their learning skills for 3
months. They focus mainly on story-telling and sharing the stories of the youth.
Another programme they have is the incubator programme that is one year long.
Berning shared that the ages
start from 18 and older and they do not need to have any experience in film or advertising
but they do encourage having a grade 12 certificate in order to be selected.
Ikasi voice is also a very new programme and its based around learner content
that comes out of the training programme. She says that a collaboration is
coming with Youth Capital around social connections and that is something to
keep an eye out for.
The advice she wanted to end off with was one of two, firstly “The story you have is the super power you have out there”, she said. She says that there are so many stories out there that has not been told and it has the potential to heal peoples past. Secondly, She said that ikasi cannot do what they do without the sponsorship and support from their supporters. She also encourages anyone that wants to join can please get involved with Ikasi.
