Sonke Gender Justice
With gender-based
violencestill active in society today, people are still not educated well on
this matter. Sonke Gender Justice is determined to educate the public on this
social matter more.
Formed in
2006 Sonke Gender Justice is a woman’s Organisation that strives towards feminist
principles. The organisations purpose is to address, respond and to prevent
gender-based violence and fights against the discrimination of people living
with HIV and AIDS. The organisation is made up of different units such as
research monitoring, evaluation and learning, policy development unit, advocacy
unit and an operations unit. The Organisation also works regionally in Africa.
In a case
where people are using violence as their right to justice against women and
children, Sonke creates sessions for people, allowing them to be more educated
on the effects that can lead after an act of violence; this promotes the
opportunity of change for these people to find more positive ways to deal with
situations.
Sonke
Gender Justice runs a men’s wellness clinic in Gugulethu and at this wellness
centre, the wellness centre focuses on men’s health and safety, one of the
activities that the wellness centre has is addressing social issues within
their communities.
The Organisation uses their communication strategies in school classrooms; they had the opportunity to have an advocacy session with the learners of Kasselsvlei High School during the school holiday period, about the social issues that happen in their communities, giving the youth advice on how to positively cope with these issues.
