Claire and Chanel from the CECD

THE CENTRE FOR EARLY CHILDHOOF DEVELOPMENT

(CECD)

Backchat was joined by the inspiring Chanel and Claire from the CECD. They shared with us their shift into writing and told us more about the book they released titled Madiba: (Our Children’s Champion) at the College of Cape Town, Crawford campus, last Monday, the 1st of August.

The Centre for Early Childhood Development(CECD) released their new book honouring the late former president Nelson Mandela’s legacy of putting children first.

The book’s release also resonates with the CECD celebrating their 28th anniversary of standing up for children’s rights and supporting early childhood development (ECD) centres in need. The Madiba speeches are brought to life through photographs captured around Cape Town by Newton James Stanford, as well as artworks created by children of different ages.

The main aim of the CECD is to enhance the lives of children and they also act as a service provider to other ECD centres. Chanel shared with us that the CECD runs various programmes and one of her favourites are the family programme. Not many children are able to go to ECD’s, so she really enjoys engaging with families and kids that are really in need.

Claire, one of the Author’s of the book says they drew inspiration for the name of their book from the Madiba archive films, where Nelson Mandela mentioned children about 416 times in the speeches he made. She also added that they picked the book up again this year and also got inspiration from their previous book titled
Madiba in children”. Claire shared that the entire CECD was involved in creating the book and over 100 kids were involved in the photographs and they really enjoyed the rawness of the children in what they were busy with.

The book is available for free at the ECD centre and anyone who would like to join the ECD or get the book can email Claire at Cpearce@cecd.org.za and the number to contact is 0216832420 and they urge anyone to engage with them on either of those platforms.
