Empowering Youth Through Mindset and Cultural Exchange: A Conversation on Bush Radio
Backchat on Bush Radio hosted this interview.
Cape Town continues to position itself as a hub for impactful youth development, and a recent interview on Bush Radio’s Backchat highlighted an inspiring initiative focused on mindset transformation, youth empowerment, and cultural exchange. The conversation featured Pastor Tae Young-Hur, alongside community leader Ashley, both of whom are actively involved in programmes aimed at equipping young people with the tools to build stronger, more purposeful futures.
Originally from South Korea, Pastor Tae Young-Hur has spent nearly nine years working across Africa, dedicating his efforts to uplifting young people through education and personal development. Having recently relocated to Cape Town, he has already begun making a meaningful impact through youth camps, community outreach, and structured mindset training programmes. One of the most notable recent initiatives was a youth camp held in Kleinmond, which brought together more than 700 high school learners and university volunteers in a space designed to inspire growth, confidence, and vision.
Central to the programme is the belief that mindset plays a critical role in shaping a young person’s future. Through practical training, participants are encouraged to shift from negative patterns of thinking towards more constructive and solution-driven perspectives. Rather than focusing on limitations or external challenges, young people are guided to take ownership of their decisions and to recognise their potential to create change in their own lives.
A distinguishing feature of the initiative is its strong emphasis on practical application. Participants are not only introduced to new ways of thinking but are also encouraged to actively engage in community-based activities such as clean-up campaigns, cultural showcases, and collaborative projects. This approach ensures that the lessons learned extend beyond theory and are translated into tangible actions that benefit both the individual and the wider community.
In addition to mindset development, the programme incorporates language and cultural education, particularly focusing on Korean language and culture. This element is designed to broaden perspectives and expose young people to global opportunities. Learning a new language is positioned as more than an academic exercise; it becomes a tool for connection, cultural understanding, and potential access to international opportunities. In today’s interconnected world, such skills can significantly enhance a young person’s prospects.
The initiative places particular emphasis on reaching underserved communities across the Cape Flats, including areas such as Heideveld, Bonteheuwel, Mitchells Plain, Khayelitsha, and Nyanga. These communities often face socio-economic challenges, making programmes that provide mentorship, structure, and opportunity especially valuable. According to Ashley, the initiative is focused on supporting those who may lack direction or resources, while also encouraging individuals who are in a position to help to volunteer and contribute to the growth of others.
Collaboration and community involvement remain central to the programme’s success. Volunteers from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to participate, creating an inclusive environment where knowledge, experience, and culture can be shared. This collective approach not only strengthens the programme but also fosters a sense of unity and shared responsibility in addressing community challenges.
As the initiative continues to grow in the Western Cape, both Pastor Hur and Ashley have extended an open invitation to young people and community members to get involved. Participation can range from attending programmes to volunteering or connecting through social media platforms such as Instagram via IYF_Cape Town. The organisers emphasise that meaningful change begins with small steps, and that consistent engagement can lead to lasting transformation.

The conversation on Backchat ultimately underscored the importance of investing in young people, not only through resources but through guidance, mentorship, and the development of a resilient mindset. In a time where many youth face uncertainty, initiatives such as this provide a pathway toward hope, purpose, and self-belief. By combining mindset training, practical engagement, and cultural exchange, the programme is contributing to the development of individuals who are better equipped to shape their own futures and positively impact their communities.
