Youth Voices Leading Change: Africa Unite at Bush Radio 89.5 FM

Bush Radio’s Backchat recently hosted an inspiring conversation with two powerful youth advocates — Mary Claire from Africa Unite and Yonela Nomngelo, a Cape Town-based human rights activist and development practitioner. The discussion highlighted the critical role young people play in shaping a more inclusive and united Africa.

The conversation unpacked the significance of Africa Day on 25 May, which marks the founding of the Organisation of African Unity in 1963. This day stands as a symbol of unity, liberation, and collective progress across the continent.

Africa Unite continues to make a meaningful impact by promoting social cohesion and human rights education, equipping young people with tools for active citizenship, and creating safe spaces for dialogue among diverse communities. Their work empowers young people to return to their communities as advocates for positive change.

The discussion also highlighted key challenges facing young Africans today, including high unemployment, limited access to opportunities and funding, safety concerns, and barriers to entering the workforce due to lack of experience. These issues continue to shape the realities many young people navigate daily.

In a diverse society like South Africa, understanding and embracing differences is essential. The guests emphasized that dialogue, empathy, and mutual respect are key to preventing conflict and building stronger, more inclusive communities. Supporting migrants and refugees was also a key focus, with emphasis placed on understanding migration, promoting empathy, and respecting human rights for all.

Both guests stressed the importance of young Africans embracing their identity and culture. Reclaiming pride in being African is seen as essential in building confidence, unity, and a stronger collective future.

Africa Unite will host a celebration under the theme “Advancing African Unity for Peaceful and Prosperous Communities” at the Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town on 23 May 2026 from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The event will include cultural performances, panel discussions, music, food, fashion, and exhibitions highlighting issues affecting African communities.

The interview closed with a powerful message that Africa’s future depends on its youth. By standing together, embracing unity, and treating one another with dignity and respect, young people have the power to shape a continent that thrives.
