From Cape Town to Saudi Arabia: Inside Solomon’s Football Journey Beyond the Pitch

Football dreams often begin on the pitch but for some, the real impact is made beyond it. On Back Chat with Bush Radio, we sat down with Solomon, a Cape Town native whose career has evolved from aspiring footballer to working across elite football environments in Africa and the Middle East.
His journey is not just about the game it’s about adaptation, discipline, and redefining success.
Solomon’s football story started at just five years old. Like many young South Africans, his early years were shaped by community clubs, weekend matches, and the unwavering support of family especially his father, who ensured he never missed training.
He progressed through local clubs, including Saxon Rovers, eventually reaching semi-professional levels. But as reality set in, so did an important realization: the odds of making it as a professional player are slim.
“There’s a very small percentage of people that make it in football. At some point, you have to be realistic and think about your future.”
That moment of honesty became the turning point that shifted his career from playing on the pitch to working behind the scenes.
Solomon’s work has taken him far beyond South Africa into Zambia and Saudi Arabia exposing him to vastly different cultures and football ecosystems.
In Zambia, he encountered both the beauty and the harsh realities of the African continent, particularly the levels of poverty that often go unseen.
Saudi Arabia, however, presented a completely different lifestyle adjustment.
“Everything happens after 8pm. The country comes alive at night—coffee shops, families gathering, social life. It’s a complete shift from what we’re used to.”
Adapting to new cultures, religious practices, and even work schedules became part of his growth—not just professionally, but personally.
One of the highlights of Solomon’s career was his time with Mamelodi Sundowns, one of Africa’s most successful football clubs.
But beyond the trophies including a historic treble and continental success the biggest lesson he took away was humility.
“No one is arrogant. Even at the top, everyone remains grounded. That’s rare in football.”
Working alongside top players like Ronwen Williams, Teboho Mokoena, and Themba Zwane, he witnessed firsthand how professionalism and character go hand in hand with success.
Outside of football, Solomon has pushed his limits through endurance events like the Comrades Marathon and Ironman competitions.
These experiences reinforced a powerful mindset:
“When you’re at the start line, it’s just you. You can’t rely on anyone else you rely on your preparation.”
This mentality has translated directly into his work ethic accountability, discipline, and self-reliance.
Today, Solomon works as a performance analyst a role that many admire, but few fully understand.
While the lifestyle may seem glamorous, the reality is far more demanding.
Behind every match lies hours of:
Video analysis
Data breakdown
Opposition research
Tactical reporting
In some cases, analysis goes as far as tracking player behavior on social media to gain insights.
“It’s not about flights and hotels. It’s hours and hours of work behind a laptop.”
Solomon is passionate about educating the next generation especially those who want to work in football beyond playing.
His advice is clear: get qualified and think globally.
“We don’t research enough. What qualifications do top professionals have? What does it take to even apply?”
He emphasizes that passion alone isn’t enough strategy, education, and sacrifice are essential.
To bridge this gap, Solomon co-founded Football Insights, an initiative aimed at educating aspiring football professionals.
Through workshops and partnerships with platforms like KickOff Magazine, they provide:
Career guidance
Industry knowledge
Real-world insights into football careers
The goal is simple: to help young people make informed decisions and avoid common pitfalls.
“Football won’t give you a thank-you check at the end. You have to build a life beyond it.”
Solomon’s journey is a powerful reminder that success in football isn’t limited to scoring goals or lifting trophies. Sometimes, it’s about knowing when to pivot, where to grow, and how to build a sustainable future.
From the streets of Cape Town to stadiums across continents, his story is one of resilience, adaptation, and purpose.
And perhaps most importantly it’s a story that many young South Africans need to hear.
