Rethinking Obesity: A Holistic Approach to Bariatric Care
Rethinking Obesity: A Holistic Approach to Bariatric Care

In recognition of World Obesity Day, we spoke with Claire, a dietitian who has been part of the Aspect Bariatric Clinic team for over two decades. With more than 25 years of experience, she works closely with patients preparing for weight-loss surgery, helping them understand nutrition, prepare for surgery, and develop sustainable habits for long-term health.
Over the years, the understanding of obesity has evolved significantly. In the past, obesity was often viewed simply as a result of poor self-control or lack of willpower. Today, healthcare professionals increasingly recognize obesity as a complex medical condition influenced by genetics, metabolism, hormones, and life events. This shift has helped move the conversation away from blame and toward supportive, evidence-based treatment.
At Aspect Bariatric Clinic, care is delivered through a multidisciplinary approach. The team includes dietitians, physicians, endocrinologists, psychologists, psychiatrists, and surgeons who work together to support patients physically and mentally throughout their weight-management journey.
Nutrition plays a key role both before and after bariatric surgery. Patients are guided to correct nutritional deficiencies, understand balanced eating, and prepare for the dietary changes required after surgery. Following surgery, they gradually transition from liquids to solid foods while ensuring adequate protein, fibre, and lifelong vitamin supplementation.
While bariatric surgery can be life changing, Claire emphasizes that sustainable lifestyle changes such as balanced nutrition, stress management, and regular physical activity are equally important for long-term success.
One of the most rewarding aspects of her work at Aspect Bariatric Clinic has been witnessing the transformation in patients’ lives. Many experience not only improved physical health but also renewed confidence, greater mobility, and the ability to engage more fully with their families and communities.
Her message to anyone struggling with weight is simple: seek support and start the conversation. With the right guidance and a supportive healthcare team, meaningful and lasting health improvements are possible.
