Empowering the Future: How IKAMVA LABANTWANA BETHU Is Transforming Young Lives in Crossroads

By Khanyiswa Mdladlamba

In the heart of Crossroads, Cape Town, where many families face deep social and economic challenges, IKAMVA LABANTWANA BETHU is quietly transforming lives. Meaning “The Future of Our Children,” the organisation’s name reflects its core belief: when we invest in young people today, we build stronger, safer, and more sustainable communities tomorrow.

Addressing Challenges Through Early Intervention

IKAMVA LABANTWANA BETHU was founded in response to rising crime, limited educational support, and a lack of structured opportunities for children in the community. Recognising that primary school years are foundational, the organisation focuses on learners from Grade 3 to Grade 7 — a critical stage for academic development, confidence building, and character formation.

By intervening early, the programme reduces children’s exposure to crime, substance abuse, and other negative influences that often impact underserved communities. More importantly, it replaces risk with opportunity.

Structured Academic Support That Delivers Results

Every weekday from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM, learners attend a structured after-school programme designed to strengthen academic performance.

  • Hour One: Homework support and guided study

  • Hour Two: Targeted tutoring in Mathematics, English, and Science

Facilitators review school reports to identify gaps and provide focused assistance where it is most needed. This intentional, data-informed approach ensures that learners do not fall behind — and instead, begin to excel.

The results speak for themselves. In the past year alone, five learners secured bursaries with the organisation’s support. By strengthening core subjects such as Mathematics and English, IKAMVA LABANTWANA BETHU is opening pathways to quality secondary education and long-term academic success.

Understanding the link between nutrition and performance, each learner also receives a nutritious meal daily — reinforcing both physical well-being and cognitive development.

Holistic Development Beyond the Classroom

Education at IKAMVA LABANTWANA BETHU extends beyond textbooks. On Fridays, learners participate in extracurricular activities such as sports, African dance, drama, and traditional music. These programmes nurture creativity, cultural pride, teamwork, and self-confidence.

Through a partnership with the University of Cape Town, selected learners attend outreach sessions on Saturdays. Exposure to higher education environments helps broaden their aspirations and demystifies university spaces that may once have felt out of reach.

Tackling Youth Unemployment Through Skills Development

The organisation’s commitment to community transformation includes addressing youth unemployment. Its Youth Café programme targets young people who are not in employment, education, or training (NEET).

This intensive two-month course provides:

  • Mental health awareness and resilience training

  • Computer literacy and office administration skills

  • Barista training

  • Employment readiness and personal development

For many participants, the programme restores confidence and uncovers hidden talents. It equips them not only with practical skills but also with a renewed sense of possibility.

Building Stronger Communities Through Partnerships

IKAMVA LABANTWANA BETHU understands that meaningful change requires collaboration. Working alongside the City of Cape Town and Golden Arrow Bus Services, the organisation has hosted career exhibitions and facilitated free transport passes for unemployed community members seeking work.

By removing barriers such as transport costs, these initiatives make employment more accessible and attainable.

Safe Spaces During School Holidays

During school holidays, structured programmes continue through educational workshops, cultural activities, camps, and supervised outings. These initiatives ensure that learners remain engaged, supported, and protected even outside the academic term.

Additionally, substance abuse awareness and empowerment programmes educate learners about the risks of drug and alcohol misuse, gender-based violence, and other societal challenges. Through open dialogue and mentorship, the organisation fosters resilience, confidence, and informed decision-making.

Expanding Impact Beyond Crossroads

What began in Crossroads has steadily expanded to communities in the Eastern Cape. This growth reflects both the effectiveness of the organisation’s model and the significant demand for structured, community-based support.

IKAMVA LABANTWANA BETHU is not simply an after-school programme. It is a community-driven movement that integrates academic excellence, cultural enrichment, skills development, and hope.

By creating safe spaces and meaningful opportunities, the organisation ensures that the future of the children it serves is not defined by circumstance but by possibility.
