INTERNATIONAL LITERACY DAY
Celebrating International Literacy
Day Backchat went out to ask different teachers how important adult and child
literacy is in one’s life. This is what they had to say:
Juffrou Ashley Daniels
“Imagine you are deaf and mute and
you cannot communicate because you are unable to write your message or people
are unable to read your message, because they cannot read or write--- then you
are really cut off from the rest of the world.”

1. If parents read for their
children and they listen attentively it will help with pronunciation and builds
their vocabulary.
2. Reading stimulates the
imagination of the child.
3. Reading to your children
is an everlasting bond.
4. If children see their
parents reading they will follow their example.
5. Lees verbreed jou kinders,
dit stimuleer jou verbeeldings.
6. Lees is ontspanned, dit
kalmeer kinders.
Juffrou Tia Swarts
“Helping someone to read and write effectively
or acquire the basic math skills so many of us take for granted, improves the
future of everyone in society. Literacy is critical to economic development as
well as individual and community well-being.”
Juffrou Smit-Wright
“Literacy is very important because
it allows us to communicate without misunderstanding. South Africa has 11
official languages and we used to be able to listen and understand one another.
If we do not listen we misunderstand each other and this leads to conflict. Reading
allows us to travel and explore places beyond our imagination.”
