Anthony and Pillay spoke to us about the launch of the Ikhaya Lemidlalo sport for development program on Tuesday, June 16. The programme is the outcome of an agreement between the Principality of Monaco and the United National Development Programme, which has contracted Glocal Forum (an NGO based in Rome) to partner with the City in implementing it. Darah spoke to Alderman Brian Watkyns, the Chairperson of the Planning and Environment Portfolio Committee (Pepco) for the City of Cape Town. Alderman Watkyns spoke to us about the City’s pilot implementation of the Problem Building Strategy. The Strategy clearly defines problem buildings as structures and erven which appear to be abandoned, derelict in appearance, overcrowded and in a deplorable state or which pose a serious health or safety risk to the natural or built environment. Grassroot Soccer-James Donald

They have recently been officially appointed by FIFA to manage the Football for Hope Centre in Khayelitsha that was open on Monday. The centre is part of FIFA’s project “20 Centres for 2010” which is their community outreach programme and a way of ensuring that the benefits of the tournament are felt everyone, particularly those from disadvantaged areas. Youth Jazz Festival- Melanie Scholtz and Tarnia van Zitters
Today on Backchat we were joined in studio by South African musician Melanie Scholtz and Tarnia van Zitters, the Project Manager at the Artscape. They spoke about the Youth Jazz Festival which will be held at the Artscape on June 6th from 3pm till 6pm. Artscape’s mentoring project is now under way for young up and coming jazz musicians who successfully auditioned for the annual programme which culminates in a Jazz Festival. The musicians are members of three bands - Public Attention, Ological Studies and Touch and perform regularly at schools and gigs across the Western Cape. The team this year includes Melanie Scholtz, Keith Tabisher, Andrew Lilley and Kevin Gibson. Project manager is Tarnia van Zitters (Artscape).

Youth Jazz Festival- Touch

We were also joined in studio by Jazz band Touch. The band was formed August 2008. The seven band members are all learners at Bergvliet High School and have known each other since pre-primary and attended the same primary school. These learners also all take music as a subject at school, can read music as well as play by ear and are members of the Bergvliet High’s Big Band. They do different types of gigs ranging from school functions to charity organizations and have recently taken part in the 2009 Cape Town Jazzathon

Youth Jazz Festival- Ological Studies

The trio are studying music at the South African College of College of Music at UCT. Sibusiso Dlamini and Phumlani Mtiti have performed together regularly with Sadé Ross recently joining them to form their small band ‘Ological Studies’.

Drug Education Agency- Bradleigh and David

Badilisha Poetry X-Change- Tantara Zawadi

Her work has been extensively published and televised. Her spoken word video “Scarlet Waters” featuring Michael Cox on bass, was featured on the website for Product (RED) created by U2’s Bono and Bobby Shriver, to raise awareness for HIV/AIDS in Africa. We interviewed VANESSA SEW CHUNG HONG an anti-smoking lobbyist who also works very closely with the National Council Against Smoking, the Cansa Association of South Africa and the Heart and Stroke Foundation]. Smokers will have to tolerate stricter anti-smoking measures as of May. May 2009 is Tobacco Control Awareness Month.

This month is in line with the upcoming tobacco control legislations which are to be implemented in South Africa with a control bill already signed by parliament but expected to be promulgated in during the month. See the attached document summarising the amendment act [Tobacco Products Control Amendment Act No. 23 of 2007 and Act No 63 of 2008].
31st May is also World No Tobacco Day with the theme, tobacco control awareness.

Sister Breyani: Five sisters, one journey, one weekend, lotsa baggage

Interview with Denise Newman, Lara Bye and Roxanne Blaise form the play Sister Breyani. Sheila, Moira, Bernadette and Cassandra decide to organise a reunion at their youngest sister Jo-Anne’s newly purchased home.

They aim to celebrate this milestone she’s reached, but also take this long overdue opportunity for family bonding. The sisters have not gathered in one place at one time for almost three years. They have lots to share and much left unspoken, brewing beneath the surface.

On one weekend in October they take the road trip from their hometown Durban, to Johannesburg, carrying literal and emotional baggage unwittingly to this site of celebration. Instead of a housewarming party, a fire of hilarious and heartbreaking stories breaks out only a few hours after their arrival, when one sister inevitably steps on another’s toes. With their partners, children and work out of the way for only 48 hours, time is not on their side, in more ways than they realise.

The play is at Baxter Theatres from 6 to 30 May.

Melanie Scholtz and Youth Jazz Festival

We had an interview with Melanie Scholtz who is a jazz artist and she will be accompanied by four bands; Just Jazz, Public Attention, Ological Studies and Touch. Artscape’s mentoring project is now under way for 21 young, up and coming jazz musicians who successfully auditioned for the annual programme which culminates in a Jazz Festival. The musicians are members of four bands - Just Jazz, Public Attention, Ological Studies and Touch and perform regularly at schools and gigs across the Western Cape.

Amongst the diverse disciplines required, the musicians showed exceptional talent within the jazz genre, displayed their professional ability and had a good understanding of the jazz idiom. Their ages range from15 and 34 years.

With the focus firmly on development and education master classes are conducted by well known local jazz icons who also form the judging panel. The team this year includes Melanie Scholtz, Keith Tabisher, Andrew Lilley and Kevin Gibson. Project manager is Tarnia van Zitters .

'What we see'. Exhibition

We had an interview with Anette Hoffman who is the curator of The exhibition, 'What we see'. The exhibition opened at the Iziko Slave Lodge on 26 February 2009. It criticises racial stereotyping by interrogating the distorted 'scientifically' generated images of Namibia's indigenous people.

The exhibition engages with culturally generated images or ways of seeing in the way of juxtaposing a case-history of the production of images of "natives", their voiced and recorded reactions to this, and contemporary South African artworks that reflect on ways of looking at and representing people.

This compelling and thought-provoking exhibition runs until the end of May 2009. A walkabout, led by curator Anette Hoffmann will take place at the following time; well worth attending.

Student Leadership Forum organized by Springfield Convent Senior School

We had an interview with Emma Selfe head of the Student Representative Council at Springfield, it was her initiative to come up with this Forum. She will be one of the students attending the Student Leadership Forum organized by Springfield Convent Senior School.

On Tuesday 5th May at 4.00pm, student leaders from 40 Cape Town schools will meet to make their voices heard to South African leaders about the key issues facing the youth of today. Following the conference, the group will present a declaration on these issues to the Speaker of Parliament for discussion in Youth Parliament.

The event, organized by the Student Representative Council of Springfield Convent Senior School, will feature Helen Zille as the key note speaker in her capacity as incoming Premier of the Western Cape.

Other speakers will help the group to explore the three key global challenges of poverty and inequality, war and conflict and global warming and climate change.

These speakers are: Nomfundo Walaza: CEO of Desmond Tutu Peace Foundation (War and Conflict), Charles Maisel: Co-founder of “Men at the side of the Road” Foundation (Poverty and Inequality) and Suzanne Carter: Representative for Environment Conservation at the British Consulate.

In the wake of the recent elections and a revived interest in politics among the youth, it is hoped that this conference will give pupils a platform through which to make a contribution to shaping the future of South Africa.

Zintle Thabethe, an HIV positive woman, is at the forefront of Project Masiluleke – a campaign that will spearhead the fight against HIV/AIDS and TB through the use of mobile phones. A million SMS’s will be sent around South Africa each day, the aim of the project is to engage the public on a personal level instead of relying only on billboards.

The AIDS messages are sent as part of “Please Call Me” messages and address AIDS related matters that are of a personal nature such as:“Are you HIV positive and scared to tell your partner or HIV positive and being mistreated by your family and friends?

CPUT Project Management raising funds for Amy Biehl Foundation

We an interview with Siya from Cape Peninsula University of Technology. A group of CPUT Project Management students have chosen the Amy Biehl Foundation as their project. They have to take a product, research it, write a marketing plan, do a promotion and get media coverage. They did a marketing plan to grow the sales of Amy’s Bread, produced by Premier Foods and sold at Pick ‘n Pay stores in the Western Cape.

The Foundation earns 4% of the sale of each loaf of Amy’s Bread which goes directly to the programmes we run in the townships. They will be running promotions at various Pick ‘n Pay stores this weekend and would really appreciate an interview to tell the public about their project, the bread and their promotions.

We had an interview with Lindi Kamsser from the University of Western Cape. She told us about the UWC hosts Leadership Seminar for High School Principals which is taking place tonight.

Matriculants are about two weeks away from writing their June Exams, which is a critical foundation for their final exams and also for their applications to University.

The University of the Western Cape has received thousands of late applications in the resent past, which were unfortunately declined. It is therefore vital for education writers and other media partners to start encouraging the matriculants to apply on time.

Cape Flats Uprising is aimed at raising funds for school fees, transport and projects for youth participating in Heal the Hoods Hip Hop Projects on the Cape Flats.

On the first event raised funds to bus over 100 youths to events hosted in Mitchells Plain, Manenberg, Khayelitsha, Delft, Grassy Park and Athlone. They have also paid dancers school fees. A portion of the funds were placed as a deposit on a vehicle to assist with transporting youth to practice sessions on the Cape Flats. They have also created a break-dance/ b-boy syllabus and taught 10 dancers to teach. These teachers will be paid to teach in their communities.

We had an interview with with Nazeem Hardy who is in charge of Marketing and Research in the Cape Town Central Library. He told us about World Book Day, which is today on the 23rd of April 2009.

The tradition of celebrating books and reading on the 23rd of April each year is, however, a long-standing one. Apart from the fact that the date coincides with the commemoration of St. George’s Day, a very special custom is practised in Catalonia and other Catalan-speaking areas of the world.

On this day roses and books are exchanged as a gesture of “a rose for love and a book forever!” In Spain the 23rd of April commemorates the death of Miguel de Cervantes, author of “Don Quixote de la Mancha”, deemed to be finest text in the Spanish language. World Book Day in South Africa has been co-ordinated by the Centre for the Book since its establishment in 1998 and we are responsible for managing activities including a nationwide poster campaign whereby approximately 50 000 special posters are designed, printed and distributed with the assistance of SABC Education, SAPPI South Africa, the Printers’ College of the Print Industries Federation of South Africa and Allied Media.

The posters are provided particularly to schools and public libraries around the country, in preparation of the occasion itself. The slogan for this year’s World Book Day campaign is “Books Talk: are you listening?” and features our nation’s favourite television personality, Noeleen Maholwana-Sangqu! Posters can be collected from national depots around the country.

We had an interview with Nathea Nicolay who is a Manager at AIDS Risk Consulting Metropolitan Employee Benefit. Nathea is the manager of AIDS Risk Consulting at Metropolitan Employee Benefits in Cape Town. She is an HIV and AIDS consultant specializing in statistics, financial management, impact assessments and strategic direction.

She does projections of the impact of HIV and AIDS on the formal business sector of South Africa, using various actuarial modeling techniques. Nathea has published articles in various financial and HIV publications and has written several papers on HIV and AIDS related statistics.

She told us about the Cellbook CellBook is proud to present the B the Future cellbook - an information booklet on HIV and AIDS which can be downloaded onto your cellphone. B the Future is one of the largest social initiatives to fight HIV and AIDS ever seen in South Africa, potentially reaching over 30 million mobile phone users.

Grassrootsoccer is a non-profit organisation which uses the game of soccer as a tool to not only up the children’s fitness, but also to educate them about diseases like HIV/Aids and how to stay free from the virus. They use African soccer stars, coaches, teachers and peer educators as role models during the 11 sessions which cover topics like good hygiene, gender equality, malaria prevention, avoiding drugs and alcohol and HIV/Aids prevention.

Born 2B drug free campaign

We had an interview with Ric Amansure from Africlinics. Africlinics is hosting a “Born 2B drug free” campaign across 40 schools, in areas such as Gugulethu, Tafelsig, Manenberg, Khayelitsha, Kraaifontein and Paarl. The campaign uses music and drama to educate learners about the dangers of drug abuse. Each learner at a school is given an armband and recites an affirmation to stay drug free. This affirmation will reach 50 000 learners across the Western Cape. Matric learners are given a lantern to burn when studying for their final exams.

This was announced by Philip Boyd, the CEO & Artistic Director of Dance for All. Phyllis Spira (OMSG) was Prima Ballerina Assoluta of CAPAB Ballet and the Assistant Artistic Director of the DFAYC up until her unexpected death in 2008. Spira’s legacy, her inspirational influence and her incredible contribution to dance both in the professional arena and in the community, will be perpetuated in and through this vibrant company.
