Abaphumeleli Orphanage
Today on Backchat we were joined on the line by Evelyn Makasi from Abaphumeleli Orphanage. The organisation helps with the creation of jobs and promotes the equal treatment of those living with HIV/Aids. The organisation started in Evelyn’s house and it started after Evelyn realised how much she liked working with children. The orphanage runs after school programmes and a choir for the kids. The objectives for Abaphumeleli are for them to own a bigger house so that they could, in the future, accommodate more children and to give these kids a proper education. Today on Backchat we were joined on the line by Courtney Abrahams from the Emergency Medical Services. Does the name sound familiar? Well it should because Courtney and Leon were involved with the blood drive at Wingfield naval Base last Saturday. Recently the Department of Health awarded the Western Cape Emergency Services staff and Courtney was awarded the “Social Capital Award” for his work in the community along with Leon Mentoor.
We were also joined on the line by Agnetha Solomon from PASCaP Trust. PASCaP Trust is an organization that focuses on the task of enabling the development of community-owned after school centres exclusively in communities living in poverty. The feature was about Human Trafficking and highlighted the dangers of this vicious crime and what we could do to alleviate the problem. Remember to speak out! Today on Backchat we spoke to Chris O’ Connor. The Mayoral Committee approved a performing arts and development programme that will be sure street kids and youth at risk. Chris is the manager of the Projects, Strategy and Support. The street kids will be trained by the Zip Zap Circus School, Dance for All, Ikapa Dance Theatre Productions, Tercia Kindo Arts, Jikeleza Dance Project, Cape Dance Company and the Athlone Academy of Music who will be working in collaboration with the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra. The programme has also generated interest for programmes in the near future from many other organisations. The street kids will perform in an orchestra using discarded material.
